This Privacy Policy explains how Sangeet Jagat (the website at omkarsangeet.org) collects, uses, stores and protects personal data. Sangeet Jagat is an initiative of Bhartiya Sangeet Kalapith, a registered society (Registration No. F-22232 (CSN), Plot No. 36, S.No. 218/1, Radhaswami Colony, Harsul, Ta. & Dist. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra – 431008, India (“we”, “us”). We are the data fiduciary for the personal data described here.
We follow the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the rules made under it, and we are preparing for the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, whose main obligations apply from 13 May 2027. Where this policy offers rights or protections earlier than the law requires, we do so voluntarily.
1. Summary
- You can read Sangeet Jagat without an account. We do not sell personal data.
- If you create a reader account, we keep only your e-mail address, the user name and display name you choose, your password (stored as a one-way hash) and the date you gave consent.
- Saved articles, followed authors and notifications are stored only so that these features work for you. You can download all of it or delete your account yourself at any time (You → Account).
- Reading history, recent searches and your text-size choice are kept only in your own browser, not on our servers.
2. What we collect and why
2.1 When you only read
- Technical data (IP address, browser and device type, pages requested, date and time) is processed by our hosting provider and our security systems to deliver the website, keep it secure and prevent abuse. Our web-hosting provider keeps server logs under its own retention schedule.
- Website statistics: we use Burst Statistics, a self-hosted analytics tool. Statistics such as page views, referrers and time on page are stored on our own server and are not shared with other companies. Depending on its settings, it may use one first-party cookie or no cookies at all (see Cookies).
2.2 When you create a reader account
- Account data: e-mail address, user name, display name, password hash, date of registration and the date you agreed to this policy. Purpose: to create and secure your account, let you log in, and send account e-mails (password set-up and reset). Basis: your consent, given when you join.
- Feature data: the articles you save, the authors you follow and the in-app notifications created for you. Purpose: to provide these features. Read notifications are deleted after 90 days and all notifications after 365 days.
- Security data: failed log-in attempts are counted for a short time (15 minutes to 1 hour) using a one-way hash of the IP address and user name, to stop password-guessing attacks.
2.3 When you write for us or contact us
- Authors: name, e-mail address, and — only with the author’s consent — a public profile (photo, credentials, areas of expertise and biography) shown on the People pages. Authors can switch their public page off at any time.
- Messages: when you write to us by e-mail or phone, we use your contact details and message only to reply and to handle your request or complaint.
2.4 Donations
Online donations, when available, are processed by Razorpay. Card, UPI and bank details are entered on Razorpay’s systems and are not received or stored by us. We receive the donor name, contact details, amount, date and transaction reference needed to acknowledge the donation, issue a receipt and keep the accounts required by law.

4. Advertising
We show advertisements through Google AdSense and may also show direct (sponsored) advertisements from organisations relevant to Indian music. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our site and/or other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info. How Google uses data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google’s certified consent tool (IAB Transparency and Consent Framework) before personalised ads are shown.
Direct advertisements are images stored on our own server. They set no cookies; we count how often each one is seen and clicked only as daily totals, without storing your IP address or any identifier. Every advertisement is labelled “Advertisement” or “Sponsored” and kept separate from articles. We do not show advertisements on health articles that have not been medically reviewed, on articles about suicide, or on account, writing and legal pages.
5. Who receives data (processors)
- Hostinger — web hosting and content delivery network (servers that deliver the pages).
- Google — Gmail (sending account e-mails from our address), Google Drive (storage of our website backups), YouTube (embedded videos) and, when used, Google AdSense.
- Razorpay — online donation payments.
These providers process data on our behalf or as independent providers under their own policies. Some may store data outside India. We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for others’ marketing. We disclose data to authorities only when required by law.
6. How long we keep data
- Reader account and feature data: until you delete your account (immediately removed from the live website), or until we close an account that breaks our Terms of Use.
- Notifications: read ones 90 days, all 365 days.
- Security counters: 15 minutes to 1 hour.
- Backups: database copies are kept for up to 14 days and file copies for up to 4 weeks, after which they are overwritten. Deleted accounts therefore disappear from backups within about 14 days.
- Donation records: as long as tax and accounting laws require.
- Where a law requires us to keep certain records or logs for a minimum period, we keep them for that period.
7. Your rights and choices
- Access and download: You → Account → “Download my data” gives you a copy of your account data, saved articles, follows and notifications.
- Correction: You → Account → “Edit profile”.
- Erasure: You → Account → “Delete my account” (reader accounts). Authors and staff can ask us by e-mail.
- Withdraw consent: deleting your account withdraws consent for its processing. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing done before.
- Nominate: you may nominate another person to exercise your rights in case of death or incapacity by writing to us.
- Grievances: contact our Grievance Officer (section 10). Once the Digital Personal Data Protection Act’s grievance provisions are in force, you may also approach the Data Protection Board of India after using our grievance process.
8. Children
Reading Sangeet Jagat is open to everyone, but reader accounts are only for people aged 18 or over. We do not knowingly create accounts for children or track children for advertising. If you believe a child has created an account, please tell us and we will delete it.
9. Security
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, two-factor authentication for administrators, limits on log-in attempts, least-privilege roles and regular off-site backups. No system is perfectly secure; if a personal-data breach affects you, we will inform you and the authorities as the law requires.
